Matt Turner

MATT TURNER
Matt Turner is regarded as one of the world’s leading improvising cellists. Equally adept as a pianist, Turner performs everything from jazz standards and twentieth century new music to alternative rock and improvised avant-garde. Turner completed his undergraduate studies atLawrenceUniversityand his Master of Music degree in Third Stream Studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Dave Holland, Geri Allen and Joe Maneri, and where he was the recipient of a Distinction in Performance Award. Turner has performed at several music festivals including the International Cello Festival in Montreal, the New Directions Cello Festival, the Chicago Asian American Jazz Festival, and with CUBE, Present Music, John Butcher, Randy Sabien, and Gerry Hemingway. Turner taught at the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music as a lecturer in jazz studies from 1993-1996. He is featured on more than two dozen recordings with such artists as Marilyn Crispell, Joseph Jarman, Jeff Song, Scott Fields, and John Harmon. Future releases feature him with Hal Rammel, Myra Melford, and Francois Houle. Turner appears on Meniscus, Stellar, O.O. Discs, Asian Improv, Rastascan, Geode, Cadence, Music and Arts, Accurate, and other labels. He continues to be active as a performer and clinician. Turner presents numerous improvisation clinics and residencies to both pre-college and college string students each year. Matt Turner is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
