KEITH BERRY
Born 1973, implanted into a normal life together with psyche that was already being filled with the numerous rubbish unnecessary for contemporary life Keith set about, like the birds in Attar's "The Conference of the Birds", in search of a Godhead and a divine unity with sound, space and the never ending pursuit of silence only to find himself back at the same harbour that his ship first set sail from. After immersing himself in the books of Aldous Huxley, Carlos Castaneda, Lao Tzu and Nietzsche, poetry from the great Sufi masters Shams-ud-din Muhammad Hafiz, Jala al-din Rumi and Farid ud-din Attar, the Japanese philosophies of Wabi-Sabi, Zen and the I Ching, a book of oracles containing the whole of human experience through the symbolism of its hexagrams, Keith resurfaced with the aim in becoming technically proficient enough with his macintosh so as able to assimilate these philosophies to sound. Keith's work has been released on such labels as trente oiseaux, Authorized Version and Twenty Hertz. More information on Keith and his work can be found at: www.satori.plus.com

Keith is featured on Crouton No. 28 on his CD, "The Ear That Was Sold To A Fish."

Since 1982, The Hafler Trio has produced a prolific body of work involving art, science, sound, religion, comedy and philosophy — emphasizing a dynamic balance and interplay of 'body' 'mind' and 'spirit' over any one of these. JOHN KANNENBERG
Sound and visual artist John Kannenberg (b.1969) received his BFA with a concentration in drawing and painting in 1993, and has been performing and writing music for over fifteen years. In 1999, John began work as a solo sound artist using manipulated field recordings as the foundation for loop-based generative electronic pieces. While his sound works have grown slightly more structured in form, they nonetheless remain freely expressive and chance-based while incorporating applied visual art techniques related to field drawing, minimalism and abstract expressionism in their construction. His major audio and visual works deal with a variety of themes including primal natural forces, spirituality and mindful contemplation, melancholy and nostalgia, and abstracted narrative tales.
John has performed in the United States and the UK and exhibited sound art installations both alone and as part of a collective of sound, visual and interactive designers known as J3. Since April 2002, John has served as the creator, designer and curator of www.stasisfield.com,, an experimental mp3 record label and digital art gallery presenting works in a variety of media by artists from across the globe. RETO MÄDER
Reto Mäder works as RM74 at the periphery of electro-acoustic music and noise with a weakness for atonal boxhauling and melancholy melodies. This resulted in solo albums on labels like ‘Domizil’ (CH), ‘dOc’ (AUT/GER), ‘Hinterzimmer’ (CH), a collaboration with RLW aka Ralf Wehowsky and in being a part of the actionist music group OHNE, together with Dave Phillips (Schimpfluch Gruppe, ex-Fear Of God), Tom Smith (To Live And Shave In L.A.) and Daniel Löwenbrück (owner of ‘Tochnit Aleph’-label). LIONEL MARCHETTI
"Lionel Marchetti was born in France in 1967. His interest in music resides in the qualities of sound. He is one of a handful of artists who in the mid-to-late 1990s took electroacoustic music out of academic studios and into the free improvisation ring. A scholar who worked at the CFMI (Lyon) and GRM (Paris) studios and published a book on acousmatic composer Michel Chion, Marchetti developed a set-up of microphones and loudspeakers he uses on stage along with tape recorders, prepared CDs, motors and radios. He often refers to his "instruments" as an "electroacoustic contraption." His live work with Jérôme Noetinger found echoes in the approach of Swiss and Austrian abstractionists like Voice Crack, Günter Müller, and Werner Dafeldecker, but Marchetti is mostly active in France, performing regularly at the club Les Instants Chavirés and at the festival Musique Action. His studio work encompasses sound collage ( ) and academic electroacoustics ( , ), although the level of poetry and refusal of genre boundaries in his music puts him closer to Kristoff K.Roll and Luc Ferrari than Pierre Henry or Bernard Parmegiani." - based on the François Couture penned bio, All Music Guide.

JON MUELLER

BHOB RAINEY
Rainey's saxophone playing eschews standard techniques; in fact, it rarely involves what have become common extended techniques. Yet, his sounds have a peculiar directness, integrated into a music that is at once meditative and disquieting. The saxophone is forgotten as one becomes immersed in pure tones, metallic chords, palpable breath, and always that primal silence, both mesmerizing and volatile. Rainey's music, although entirely acoustic, is in close kinship with electronic music, as evidenced in his collaborations with Gunter Mueller, Lionel Marchetti, Kevin Drumm, Ralf Wehowsky, Jerome Noetinger, and Jason Lescalleet, to name a few. With trumpeter Greg Kelley, he is the cofounder of the unlikely improv supergroup, nmperign, and is also the founder and director of the premier electroacoustic ensemble, the BSC. http://bhobrainey.net

CHRIS ROSENAU
Normally he doesn't have a beard, although once in the early 1990's he saw the band Melvins in Madison, WI and Joe Preston had a kind of reverse mohawk goatee. . .like a regular goatee except with the middle of the chin shaved so what was on his face was tantamount to two thick hair spikes emerging from either side of his chin. Chris had one of those for a while after seeing that show, but hasn't had much in the way of beards for a while. He might grow one again. If it happens it will definitely be in the winter. You will never see Chris Rosenau with a beard in the summer. Most of the people Chris has toured with didn't have beards. Some did. When on tour, he prefers to sleep on the floor, with a pillow that has the word "mother" written on it in black magic marker. this specific pillow accompanies him on tour regardless of continent, distance, or inconvenience. Chris has played with and recorded all sorts of interesting people regardless of continent, distance, or inconvenience, as well. Some you might have heard of, some probably not. Most, again, didn't have beards either. Some did. Chris thinks Hal Rammel's beard suits Hal very well.

Chris appears in some fashion on most of the Crouton releases to date, having most notably contributed either fun or procrastination, and oftentimes both.

MATTHEW WALDRON
M.S. Waldron was born in Toronto at the donkey-end of 1969, and began doing graphic work almost immediately (but with limited success for several years). In 1980, he was moved to California; to this day he has still not gotten the hang of it. The first attempts at audio composition were made in 1988, with his ongoing recording project (regrettably named "irr. app. (ext.)") being founded in 1991. 8 records under this name have been completed (but not released) so far. Also in 1991, the first exhibition of visual work, "A Luncheon of Locusts", was presented in Cupertino at The Other Gallery. Between 1995 and 2000 the 'non-performance' series was executed, involving either animals or unsuspecting bystanders as audience members; but it wasn't until March 2003 that the first public irr. app. (ext.) performance managed to take place in Oakland. This was arranged to coincide with the second exhibition of visual work, "Immolating Without Oxygen", presented at Aquarius Records in San Francisco. In the period from 2001 - 2003 several scores for Butoh performances were also created, including "Korper Re" and an early version of "Tasting an Ocean" for Shinichi Momo Koga, and "Innocent Malice" for Barely Human Dance Company. Independent of these endeavours (but not unrelated to them), M.S. Waldron co-founded the Oneiromantic Ambiguity Collective, a writing & performance group active since 1998.

Matthew Waldron is featured on Crouton No. 21 with his work as irr. app. (ext.) on the CD "Dust Pincher Appliances."
